One way might be to look at some of the people who have been involved in the
organization. Over the past two decades many leaders emerged who have served the
organization well. The sidebar lists the presidents and executive directors of
Women of the ELCA and their years of service. What an opportunity for prayer!
Give thanks and praise to God for lifting up these amazing women, a few of whom
have already entered upon their heavenly life. Some of these were midwives who, like Shiprah and Puah of the book of Exodus, helped birth the baby organization. Others followed as nurturers, mentors, challengers. Each gave selflessly of her time and gifts; each had her own unique message. Remember the first president who, whenever too much seemed to be up in the air, bolstered spirits with the advice, "Be kind to yourselves remember, we are in transition." And our most recent president who, in keeping with the triennium theme, "Act boldly," accepted her election as president despite a recent tragedy in her family with this challenge to women: "Go beyond your comfort zone, and when you think you cant go anymore, remember this: You cant be burned out youre not on fire yet." Nor must we ever forget the strength and good will of the women on the front lines: those women over the years in units and circles, conferences and clusters, synodical leaders and participants, too many to fit in any sidebar, but equally important known by God, called by God. Offer a prayer of thanks for all of them, too. |
